This is a 16mm film scan of the 1989 OVA "Mini Yon Soldier Rin!" Rin Shiguma, a young boy, is a champion in the sport of mini four-wheel drive (Mini 4WD) racing with his favorite electric model car, Soldier. He wins the Grand Prix race against his rival, Waka, and breaks his record for consecutive wins. However, afterwards, a group of mysterious racers hired by Waka appear before Rin. One of them, Mr. Mechanic, who is both a skilled mechanic and a magician, comes forward as the first one to battle Rin. Rin accepts the challenge, but little does he know what Mr. Mechanic has in store... (Description from MAL)
The OVA was made to promote the Mini 4WD toy craze that was sweeping Japan at the time, but was only ever released on VHS previously before this. It was never released again in any official capacity, so this marks the first time it's gotten an HD transfer and release.
Two 16mm film prints of this OVA were acquired by MartyMcFlies of LonelyChaser Fansubs, and scanned by us in 4K. It was then subbed by our friends over at LonelyChaser Fansubs as well. The final output you see here is actually a combination of footage from both prints, as both prints had some share of missing footage. The missing bits were spliced into where they needed to be depending on which print had the footage, so the end result is fully complete. The original VHS was also acquired and captured for its higher quality stereo audio and was synced to the high quality film footage for this release.
